"Memoirs of a Geisha" is based on the 1997 novel of the same name by Arthur Golden.

Though set in Japan, a significant portion of the film was shot in Southern California to recreate the scenic landscapes and the historic geisha district of Kyoto.

Zhang Ziyi, who played Sayuri, underwent six weeks of geisha boot camp to prepare for her role, learning the traditional arts of the geisha including dance and music.

The film won three Academy Awards in 2006: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design.

Many of the dance sequences in the film were choreographed by John DeLuca, known for his work in movies like "Mary Poppins Returns."

To enhance authenticity, traditional Japanese instruments like the shamisen were prominently used in the film's musical score.

The movie faced some controversy for casting Chinese actresses (Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li) in prominent Japanese roles, igniting discussions on cultural representation in cinema.
