I just did it everywhere I went. It was just something you could do and go on about your business." - Taki 183
Fun facts
Taki 183 is considered one of the pioneers of modern street graffiti, and his work dates back to the 1970s.
He got his name "Taki" from a diminutive form of his Greek name, and "183" comes from his street address on 183rd Street in New York.
The New York Times featured Taki 183 in an article in 1971, which brought a lot of attention to him and street graffiti as an emerging art form.
Taki 183's simplistic style of writing his name in a straightforward manner inspired countless other "writers" to do the same, leading to the modern graffiti movement.
He was known to have tagged everything, from subway cars to walls to station signs, marking the city with his signature.
Taki 183 stopped tagging by the mid-1970s, but his legacy lives on, influencing the next generations of street artists.
While many saw graffiti as vandalism, Taki 183 and his contemporaries viewed it as a form of self-expression and a way to claim a piece of the vast urban landscape of New York City.
